Does Alberta Insurance Cover Chiropractic? Direct Billing Explained

One of the first questions we get from new patients in Edmonton is a practical one: “Is this covered?” The short answer for most people is yes — and with direct billing, you often pay little or nothing out of pocket. Here’s how it actually works in Alberta.

Most extended health plans cover chiropractic

The vast majority of workplace and private extended health benefit plans in Alberta include coverage for chiropractic care, and most also cover registered massage therapy. Your plan usually sets a yearly dollar maximum (commonly a few hundred dollars per practitioner type) and sometimes a per-visit cap. What it covers, and how much, depends on your specific plan — but if you have benefits through an employer, there’s a good chance chiropractic is in there.

Alberta Health Care (the public plan) does not cover routine chiropractic visits, which is why extended/private benefits matter. The good news is those private plans are common, and you don’t need a doctor’s referral to use them for chiropractic in Alberta.

What “direct billing” actually means

Direct billing means we submit your claim to your insurance provider for you, at the time of your visit. Instead of paying the full amount and waiting weeks for reimbursement, the covered portion goes straight to your insurer — you only pay the difference, if any. No forms, no waiting, no chasing paperwork.

At Oxford Chiropractic & Wellness we direct bill more than 47 insurance providers, including Alberta Blue Cross, Canada Life, Sun Life, Manulife, GreenShield, and Desjardins. If your insurer supports direct billing, we handle it at the front desk.

What to bring to your first visit

  • Your insurance or benefits card (or the policy and member/ID numbers)
  • The name of the plan holder if it’s a family or spousal plan
  • A rough idea of your remaining balance if you’ve used the benefit elsewhere this year

If you’re not sure what your plan covers, don’t let that stop you from booking. Call us and we’ll help you check, or we’ll verify coverage when you come in.

Motor vehicle and work injuries are covered differently

If your injury came from a car accident or a workplace incident, it’s usually covered through your auto insurance (MVA benefits) or WCB Alberta — not your extended health plan — and often at no cost to you. We bill those directly too and handle the documentation. See our posts on car accident care and WCB work injuries for the details.

The bottom line

Cost shouldn’t be the reason you put off feeling better. Most Edmonton patients are covered, direct billing keeps it simple, and we’ll help you sort out the details. Call (825) 394-3641 or book online — we’re at 15152 127 St NW in North Edmonton with free parking and same-week appointments.
