If you’ve never been to a chiropractor, the idea can be a little intimidating. The cracking sound, the stories you’ve heard, the worry that someone is going to “crack your neck” — it’s enough to make anyone hesitate. These are the exact questions new patients ask us every week at our North Edmonton clinic, so let’s answer them honestly.
Is chiropractic safe?
For the vast majority of people, yes. Chiropractic is one of the safest drug-free, non-surgical ways to treat back pain, neck pain, headaches, and joint problems. It doesn’t rely on medication or injections, and a good chiropractor never treats you blind — every plan starts with a full history and physical assessment so we understand what’s actually going on before anything hands-on happens.
That said, we’ll always be honest: chiropractic isn’t a cure-all, and it isn’t right for every single problem. Part of a proper assessment is spotting the cases that need imaging or a medical referral first — and telling you so.
Does an adjustment hurt?
Usually not. Most people are surprised by how quick and gentle an adjustment is, and many feel relief right away as pressure comes off a stuck joint. It’s normal to feel a little mild soreness afterward, similar to how you feel the day after a good workout — that fades within a day or two. If you’re in acute pain or you’re nervous, we adjust our approach and use gentler techniques.
Wait — what is that cracking sound?
That “pop” worries a lot of people, but it isn’t bones grinding together. It’s a completely harmless release of gas from the fluid inside the joint — the same thing that happens when you crack your knuckles. It’s called cavitation. Here’s the part most people don’t know: the sound isn’t the point. A gentle, precise adjustment can restore movement to a joint whether or not it makes any noise at all, which is why some of our techniques are completely silent.
Is it bad to crack your own back or neck?
This is one of the most common questions we get. An occasional stretch that pops your back on its own is generally harmless. The problem is habitual, forceful self-cracking:
- When you crank your own back or neck, you can’t target the specific joint that’s actually stuck — you usually move the joints that are already too loose, which can make instability worse over time.
- It often brings temporary relief that fades fast, so you do it again and again, chasing the feeling without fixing the cause.
- The neck in particular has a lot going on in a small space, so forcefully wrenching it yourself is a habit worth breaking.
A chiropractor is trained to find the one restricted joint that needs to move and adjust it precisely — the opposite of a random self-crack.
Is having your neck adjusted safe?
Neck adjustments make people the most nervous, and it’s a fair question. Serious complications are very rare, and a trained chiropractor screens for the risk factors during your assessment before ever touching your neck. If you’re anxious about the traditional adjustment, we have gentle, low-force options — like the Activator instrument, which delivers a precise, controlled impulse with no twisting at all. You’re always in control of what happens.
When we’ll tell you chiropractic isn’t the answer
A trustworthy clinic screens people out as well as in. If your symptoms point to something that needs medical imaging, a specialist, or urgent care — sudden severe pain, pain after a major trauma, numbness or weakness that’s spreading, or certain health conditions — we’ll tell you honestly and help you get to the right place. Getting you better matters more than booking another appointment.
What your first visit actually looks like
No surprises. Dr. Fayad takes a full history, discusses your symptoms and goals, and does a proper physical assessment before any treatment. He’ll explain what he finds and walk you through a realistic plan — and you won’t be pushed into a long-term package you didn’t ask for. Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing, and come with your questions.
The bottom line
Chiropractic is safe, usually painless, and one of the most effective drug-free ways to deal with back pain, neck pain, and headaches — as long as it starts with a proper assessment. If you’ve been putting off getting checked because you weren’t sure what to expect, now you know. No referral needed, direct billing available, and same-week appointments usually open.
