Plantar Fasciitis: Why Your Heel Hurts and How to Fix It

If your very first steps out of bed feel like a nail in your heel, you probably have plantar fasciitis. It’s one of the most common causes of heel pain — and one of the most frustrating, because people tend to limp along with it for months hoping it’ll just go away. It usually won’t on its own, but it responds well once you treat the actual cause.

What plantar fasciitis is

The plantar fascia is a thick band of tissue that runs along the bottom of your foot, connecting your heel to your toes and supporting your arch. When it gets overloaded, tiny irritations and inflammation build up where it attaches to the heel. That’s the pain you feel.

The tell-tale sign

The classic giveaway is that first-step pain — sharp heel pain when you get out of bed in the morning or stand up after sitting a while. It often eases as you warm up and move around, then returns after rest. Pain that behaves like that is plantar fasciitis until proven otherwise.

Why it happens

  • Feet that overpronate (roll inward) or have very high or flat arches.
  • A lot of standing or walking on hard surfaces — common in trades, retail, and healthcare.
  • Tight calves and Achilles tendons pulling on the heel.
  • Worn-out or unsupportive footwear.
  • A recent jump in activity or weight.

What helps at home

  • Calf and plantar-fascia stretches, especially before those first morning steps.
  • Roll the arch over a frozen water bottle for a few minutes to stretch and ice at once.
  • Supportive shoes — and don’t walk barefoot on hard floors while it’s flared.
  • Ease off the aggravating activity temporarily rather than pushing through.

Fixing the root cause

Home care calms the symptoms, but plantar fasciitis keeps coming back if the underlying mechanics aren’t addressed. That’s where treatment comes in: soft-tissue therapy to release the tight fascia and calf, work on the foot and ankle joints to restore normal movement, and — importantly — custom orthotics. Because the problem is usually how your foot loads with every step, insoles built from a cast of your feet correct the alignment from the ground up and take the constant strain off the fascia. That’s what stops it from returning.

The bottom line

Morning heel pain isn’t something you have to live with, and “walking it off” for months rarely fixes it. Treat the tissue and correct the mechanics underneath it.
