Non-Surgical Spinal Decompression: Can It Help Your Disc Pain?

If you’ve been told you have a bulging or herniated disc — or you’re dealing with that sharp, shooting pain of sciatica down your leg — you’ve probably wondered whether surgery is where this ends up. For a lot of people, it isn’t. Non-surgical spinal decompression is one of the gentler, drug-free options we use at our North Edmonton clinic to take pressure off an irritated disc and the nerve it’s pressing on.

What spinal decompression actually is

Between each of your vertebrae sits a disc that works like a cushion. When a disc bulges, herniates, or dries out with age, it can push outward onto the nerves running down your spine. That pressure is what sends pain, numbness, or tingling into your leg or arm — the classic pattern of sciatica.

Spinal decompression gently creates space between the vertebrae, which reduces the pressure on the disc and the nerve it’s irritating, and helps encourage the disc back toward its normal position. Instead of masking the pain with medication, it addresses the mechanical cause.

How we do it — Flexion/Distraction

At Oxford Chiropractic & Wellness, Dr. Ahmed Fayad uses a technique called Flexion/Distraction, performed on a specialized table. There’s no twisting and no forceful “cracking.” You lie face down while the table moves in slow, rhythmic motions, and Dr. Fayad applies light, targeted contact to the exact segment causing your pain.

Most patients find it comfortable — even relaxing — which is a big part of why it suits two groups especially well: people who are nervous about traditional manual adjustments, and people whose disc pain is too acute for a firmer approach.

Who it tends to help

Decompression is most often used for:

  • Herniated or bulging discs
  • Sciatica and pinched nerves
  • Spinal stenosis (narrowing that crowds the nerves)
  • Degenerative disc pain
  • Chronic low back or neck pain that hasn’t responded to other care

It’s not right for everyone, though. Every plan starts with a thorough assessment so we know exactly where the problem is and whether decompression is a good fit. If your situation needs imaging or a referral first, we’ll tell you honestly — that matters more than pushing a treatment.

Does it work without surgery?

For many people with disc-related pain, conservative care like decompression, combined with the right exercises, provides real relief and helps them avoid more invasive options. It’s not a magic cure, and results depend on your specific condition and how long it’s been going on. What we can promise is an honest assessment and a realistic plan — we don’t lock anyone into long-term packages.

It works best as part of a plan

Decompression rarely works alone. We usually pair it with targeted rehab exercises to strengthen the muscles that support your spine, and massage therapy from our Registered Massage Therapists to release the tight, guarding muscles that build up around a disc injury. The goal isn’t just short-term relief — it’s keeping the problem from coming back.

When disc pain is an emergency

Most disc pain is mechanical and responds to conservative care. But some symptoms need urgent medical attention, not a clinic visit: severe or progressive leg weakness, or any loss of bladder or bowel control. Those are rare, but if they happen, go to a hospital.

The bottom line

If disc pain or sciatica is running your life, you have options before surgery. Gentle, non-surgical spinal decompression is drug-free, comfortable, and covered as part of chiropractic care by most Alberta insurance plans (we direct bill 40+ insurers, and MVA or WCB injuries are usually covered in full). No referral needed. Call (825) 394-3641 or book online at our North Edmonton clinic, 15152 127 St NW.
